What is Electrolysis?

Fed up with unwanted hair that keeps coming back, no matter what you try? If you've got blonde, grey, red, or white hair that laser can't touch—or you need precise work on delicate facial areas—electrolysis is your answer. It's the only method recognised by the FDA and IMA as truly permanent hair removal.

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal, effective on all hair colours including blonde, grey, and white. A fine probe delivers electrical current directly to hair follicles, destroying growth cells without damaging surrounding skin. Each treated follicle is permanently disabled.

Electrolysis has been used for permanent hair removal since 1875—that's nearly 150 years of proven results. While laser hair removal has revolutionised the treatment of large areas, electrolysis remains unmatched for precision work and light-coloured hair that doesn't respond to laser.

How Electrolysis Works:

A very fine probe (thinner than the hair itself) is inserted into the hair follicle—not into the skin, but into the natural opening where the hair grows. A tiny amount of electrical current is then delivered for a fraction of a second. This current destroys the cells responsible for hair growth, permanently disabling that follicle. The damaged cells cannot regenerate. Regeneration failure means that specific follicle will never produce hair again.

Kathryn uses two types of electrolysis, selecting the most appropriate method for each client:

• Thermolysis – Uses continuous high-frequency radio energy to selectively heat and destroy the hair follicle.

• Flash – Delivers high-frequency radio energy very quickly for rapid hair follicle destruction.

Why Choose Electrolysis Over Laser?

Laser hair removal works brilliantly for dark hair on large areas—but it has limitations. Laser targets melanin (pigment), which means it can't effectively treat blonde, grey, red, or white hair. It also struggles with very fine hair or areas where precision is crucial.

Electrolysis works on absolutely any hair colour or type because it targets the follicle directly, not the pigment. This makes it ideal for:

• Facial hair — Upper lip, chin, cheeks, sideburns. Electrolysis offers the precision needed for these visible areas.

• Eyebrow shaping — Permanent sculpting of your brow shape without lifelong maintenance.

• Light-coloured hair — Blonde peach fuzz, grey hairs, ginger hairs, white hairs—all treatable.

• Post-laser finishing — After a course of laser treatment, any remaining stubborn or light hairs can be permanently removed with electrolysis.

• Hormone-related hair — PCOS, menopause, or other hormonal conditions often cause new hair growth. Electrolysis permanently removes each treated follicle regardless of hormonal fluctuations.

The Electrolysis Experience:

Each hair is treated individually, which makes electrolysis slower than laser for large areas. However, it's perfect for smaller areas where precision matters. Sessions at Mode Laser Skin Clinic typically last 30-60 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

Most clients describe the sensation as a quick sting or heat that disappears immediately. Facial areas are more sensitive than body areas, but the discomfort is brief—each hair takes only a fraction of a second to treat.

Understanding the Treatment Timeline:

Hair grows in cycles, and only hair in the active growth phase can be permanently destroyed. This is why multiple sessions are needed—you're catching different hairs as they enter their growth phase. For small areas like the upper lip, you might need 12 sessions. Larger or denser areas require more.

The exact number of sessions depends on: the area being treated, hair density, your hair growth cycle, and whether there's hormonal influence on hair growth. Kathryn will give you a realistic estimate during your consultation.

Kathryn's Electrolysis Experience:

Kathryn is a highly experienced electrolysis practitioner who understands the nuances that make the difference between good results and excellent results: probe selection, current levels, treatment angles, and timing. Her expertise at Mode Laser Skin Clinic is reflected in the permanence of her results and the minimal discomfort her clients experience. Mode Laser Skin Clinic is fully licensed by Lichfield District Council to provide electrolysis treatments.

Electrolysis FAQs

This varies significantly based on the area, hair density, and your hair growth cycle. Small areas may need 12 sessions, while larger or denser areas require more.

Most clients describe a brief tingling or heat sensation with each hair. Sensitivity varies by area, with facial areas typically more sensitive than body.

Yes. Electrolysis is the only method recognised as truly permanent. Once a follicle is successfully treated, it cannot produce new hair.

Laser is faster for large areas with dark hair. Electrolysis is better for precision work, light-coloured hair, and small areas. Many clients use both.

Yes. Electrolysis is particularly effective for facial hair including chin, upper lip, and eyebrow shaping.

Do You Experience Any of These?

If any of these sound familiar, this treatment could be right for you.

Blonde, grey, or red facial hair that laser can't remove

The Solution

Electrolysis works on ALL hair colours—it targets the follicle directly, not the pigment

The Problem

Unwanted chin or upper lip hair that affects your confidence

The Solution

Precise electrolysis removes individual hairs permanently, restoring smooth, clear skin

The Problem

Stubborn hairs remaining after laser treatment

The Solution

Electrolysis is the perfect finish—treating any hairs laser couldn't catch

Hormonal hair growth (PCOS, menopause) that keeps coming back

The Solution

Once a follicle is treated, it's gone forever—even with ongoing hormonal changes

What to Expect

Step 1

Consultation

Kathryn will examine the treatment area, discuss your hair removal history, and explain how many sessions you're likely to need. A patch test may be performed.

Step 2

Preparation

Let the hair grow to at least 2-3mm before your appointment so it can be seen and treated. The area will be cleansed before treatment begins.

Step 3

During Treatment

A fine probe is inserted into each hair follicle (not into the skin itself) and a brief electrical current is applied. Most clients describe a quick tingling or heat sensation. Sessions last 30-60 minutes.

Step 4

Immediately After

You may have slight redness or small bumps that settle within a few hours to days. Avoid touching the area and keep it clean. No makeup on treated facial areas for 24 hours.

Step 5

Results Timeline

Each hair is permanently removed once the follicle is destroyed. Multiple sessions are needed as hair grows in cycles—typically 12 sessions for small areas, more for larger or denser areas.

Is Electrolysis Right for You?

Ideal For

  • Blonde, grey, red, or white hair (laser doesn't work on these)
  • Small, precise areas like upper lip, chin, eyebrows
  • Finishing off after a laser hair removal course
  • Anyone wanting truly permanent results
  • Finally addressing facial hair that's affected your confidence for years

May Not Be Suitable For

  • Pregnancy (facial electrolysis only—body areas are fine)
  • Pacemaker or electronic implants
  • Active skin infections in the treatment area
  • Recent sunburn or tanned skin
Not Sure?

Not sure if electrolysis is right for your hair type? Even if laser hasn't worked for you, electrolysis targets follicles directly rather than pigment. Without proper assessment, you won't know how many sessions your specific hair density requires. Kathryn will assess your hair and skin during a free consultation and recommend the best approach.

Key Benefits

Truly Permanent Hair Removal

Electrolysis is the only hair removal method recognised by the British Institute & Association of Electrolysis (BIAE) as the method for permanent hair removal. Once a follicle has been successfully treated, it cannot regenerate or produce new hair. This isn't reduction or thinning—it's complete, permanent removal of each treated follicle. Finally, you can stop the endless cycle of waxing, threading, and plucking.

Effective on All Hair Colours

Unlike laser (which requires dark pigment), electrolysis works on absolutely any hair colour: blonde, grey, red, white, and everything in between. If laser hasn't worked for your hair type, electrolysis will. Even if you've been told your hair can't be treated, Mode Laser Skin Clinic can help.

Safe for All Skin Types and Tones

Electrolysis doesn't rely on contrast between hair and skin colour, making it safe and effective for every skin tone from very fair to very dark. Kathryn has treated clients across the full spectrum of skin types.

Unmatched Precision for Delicate Areas

For facial hair, eyebrow shaping, and other areas requiring precision, electrolysis is unmatched. Each hair is treated individually, allowing for precise control over exactly which hairs are removed and which are left untouched.

Zero Regrowth from Treated Follicles

A successfully treated follicle is permanently destroyed and cannot produce new hair—not now, not in ten years, not ever. This is particularly valuable for hormone-related hair growth where new follicles may activate, but treated ones remain dormant.

Perfect Partner to Laser Treatment

Many clients start with laser for large areas and dark hair, then switch to electrolysis for the finishing touches—light hairs that laser can't treat, or precise facial work. This combination approach delivers the most comprehensive permanent results. Without this final step, stray hairs continue to appear.
